College Tour

College Road Trip!  I’ve been on the mid-west college tour: Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin.  We still don’t know where our prospective college student is heading off to, but what a time we’ve had of bonding in the car and writing out the pros and cons of each school at dinner.  Now if she’d just get into her dream school!  But which one?  What a luxury to have a choice.

Do’s and Don’ts of looking at Colleges and Universities:

Take as many College tours as you can

If your student is serious about the school see if they can sit in on a class

Make sure you check out the cafeteria food and snack bar

Is having a hip town or large city important

Do you care if your living in the middle of a cornfield

Are sports important

How old is their workout facility

How long of a walk from the dorms to the classrooms

Is climate important

Proximity to home

Is having a car important – think about parking and snow

Check out the dorms, the bathroom and shower situation (mold on shower curtains)

Watch your daughters face when she sees the closet for the first time in the dorm room (Priceless)

Airport, Bus, or Shuttle

Size of school

Safety

How far is the laundry room from the dorm room

Arts and Entertainment

Education vs Fun

Do they have a teaching hospital connected to the school

Too Liberal or Too Conservative

Air Conditioning in the dorms

Study Abroad Program

Taught by Professors or Grad Students

Class Size

Are big football week-ends important

Do they have the major of study they are interested in and can they switch majors

And what is most important, that a friend reminded me,  is that it is their decision where they are going to spend the next 4 or 5 years – not mine.

“Today you are you, that is truer than true.

There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”  Dr. Seuss
